After regaining his powers, Li Lun played a game of chess face-to-face with Zhao Yuanzhou. Zhao Yuanzhou remarked that life is like chess—one wrong move leads to a series of precarious steps. Li Lun replied that he had never aspired to become human, unlike Zhao Yuanzhou, who had always longed for the mortal world. Their decision to escape to the human realm had already revealed their respective stances, or perhaps it was always a matter of competition.

With that, Li Lun overturned the chessboard and unleashed his full powers to attack Zhao Yuanzhou. Having sacrificed his inner dan, Zhao Yuanzhou was no match and was quickly defeated. Zhuo Yichen and the others arrived to rescue him, shielding Zhao Yuanzhou from Li Lun’s attacks. Zhuo Yichen believed that Zhao Yuanzhou had exhausted his strength repairing the Cloudlight Sword. However, Zhao Yuanzhou revealed that he had done it more to save Bai Jiu.

Seeing Zhao Yuanzhou risk his life for mere mortals, Li Lun became even more enraged and violent. Pei Sijing shot her sword at him but was struck by Li Lun’s malevolent energy and thrown aside. Pei Siheng suddenly appeared to block Li Lun’s attack and engaged him in combat, but his inferior skills led to him being heavily struck down. Zhuo Yichen wielded the Cloudlight Sword, demonstrating its power.

However, his kind heart made him avoid hitting any vital spots, as he couldn’t bear to kill. Wen Xiao blew the Bai Ze Order to seal Li Lun, but Zhuo Yichen warned her not to take such risks, as each use deepened the poison in her body. Ignoring the warning, Wen Xiao continued playing the flute. Li Lun gathered his strength and broke free, flinging Wen Xiao aside. Zhuo Yichen checked Wen Xiao’s injuries.

She urged him to do everything possible to stop Li Lun; otherwise, Li Lun and Bai Jiu’s divine consciousness would perish together. As Zhuo Yichen hesitated, Li Lun launched another attack. Ying Lei pushed Zhuo Yichen out of the way, using his body to block the attack. Seizing the moment, he moved behind Li Lun and restrained him. Zhuo Yichen quickly struck Li Lun with the Cloudlight Sword.

Wen Xiao brought out a piece of locust tree root, explaining that Zhao Yuanzhou could not bear to see Li Lun’s soul scattered. He intended to transfer Li Lun’s consciousness into the root, allowing him to cultivate for a century and eventually reincarnate as a human. This was Zhao Yuanzhou’s final act of mercy as a friend. Li Lun’s soul was soon absorbed into the root. Meanwhile, Ying Lei, cradling Bai Jiu’s body, was already on the brink of death.

As Zhuo Yichen moved to catch Bai Jiu, he realized that Ying Lei had exhausted all his energy. While shielding everyone else from Li Lun’s attacks, Ying Lei had completely depleted his divine power. Before his spirit dissipated, he entrusted Zhuo Yichen with caring for Bai Jiu, saying that Zhuo Yichen had always been Bai Jiu’s greatest role model. He also wished for Bai Jiu to become the best doctor in Tiandu.

After Ying Lei’s consciousness vanished, Bai Jiu finally awoke from his coma. Seeing his mother, Bai Yan, by his bedside filled him with joy, though he remained unaware of the sacrifices made by the demon-catching team to save him. Zhuo Yichen asked Zhao Yuanzhou why he hadn’t disclosed earlier that repairing the Cloudlight Sword would drain all his powers. Zhao Yuanzhou replied that Wen Xiao was willing to risk her life to save Bai Jiu.

If all he had to do was expend his powers without endangering his life, it was hardly worth mentioning. Once fully recovered, Bai Jiu felt as though he were in a dream, seeing Ying Lei drifting farther and farther away. The person who had treated him like an older brother was now forever out of reach. Zhuo Yichen comforted Bai Jiu and handed him a gift Ying Lei had asked him to deliver—a jar of almond milk custard.

Bai Jiu had once mentioned that he loved his mother’s homemade almond custard. Ying Lei, remembering this, had gone to the trouble of making an entire jar for him. Thinking of Ying Lei’s thoughtfulness made Bai Jiu miss him even more. Pei Sijing blamed herself for failing to protect her friends, but Wen Xiao reassured her that she had at least protected Wen Xiao during Li Lun’s attack.

Zhuo Yichen entrusted Bai Jiu with caring for the rest of the demon-catching team, giving Bai Jiu a sense of finality. Reflecting on Zhen Mei’s words and influenced by Ying Lei’s sacrifice, Zhuo Yichen resolved to personally absorb the poison from Wen Xiao.
