Bai Jiu examined Wen Xiao's pulse and discovered that her condition was critical. Feeling deeply saddened, he lamented that Wen Xiao had willingly sacrificed her dragon scales to save him. Wen Xiao reassured him, saying that while there could always be a successor to the Bai Ze Goddess, there was only one Bai Jiu. While Wen Xiao and the now-powerless Zhao Yuanzhou chatted, Bai Yan brought urgent news: a large-scale plague had suddenly erupted in Tiandu.

The illness spread rapidly, leaving the city's doctors helpless. The royal court pressured the Demon-Catching Bureau to act, but Fan Ying had disappeared, and Wen Xiao suspected the plague was the work of a demon beast. Zhuo Yichen tracked the source of the epidemic to a sachet, which Zhao Yuanzhou identified as belonging to Fei. Wen Xiao attempted to locate Fei using the Bai Ze's divine power but could not sense its presence.

Bai Jiu locked himself in his workshop day and night, researching a cure for the plague. Zhuo Yichen urged him to take it easier, but Bai Jiu confessed that he was driven by fear. As a child, he had resented and distanced himself from his father, believing him responsible for his mother's fate, wasting much of his father's affection. Zhuo Yichen comforted him, pointing out that Bai Jiu still had a chance to make amends, unlike him.

Growing up, the only constant in Zhuo Yichen's life had been Wen Xiao. When Bai Jiu asked if Zhuo Yichen liked Wen Xiao, he explained that affection has many layers, and his feelings for her transcended romantic love. Wen Xiao became increasingly melancholic over Fan Ying's disappearance. Zhao Yuanzhou tried to console her, vowing to find him. After days of dedicated research, Bai Jiu finally discovered an effective medicinal ingredient.

Since the plague spread through scent, he proposed sealing people's sense of smell and using Juniper wood to suppress the transmission. Once the medicine was distributed, Wen Xiao, Zhao Yuanzhou, and Zhuo Yichen stealthily infiltrated the Chongwu military prison. With Pei Sijing’s knowledge of the guard rotation, they skillfully avoided detection. Zhao Yuanzhou suspected Fei was imprisoned in the dungeon. His hunch proved correct after a few steps, and they also found Fan Ying confined in the same room.

As Wen Xiao and Zhao Yuanzhou tried to pull Fan Ying away, they noticed he had developed an inner dan. Wen Zongyu suddenly appeared before them. Zhao Yuanzhou recalled Wen Zongyu’s earlier resurrection after being burned by the Never-Ending Wood and deduced that he had Princess Longyu's phoenix pearl, allowing him to transform into a phoenix demon. Wen Zongyu confirmed this and revealed his plan to create an invincible army of demonized humans.

Moreover, he revealed that the herbal remedy Bai Jiu had distributed to the townsfolk would accelerate their transformation into demonized humans by the next day. Wen Xiao accused Wen Zongyu of cruelty, but he argued that becoming demonized humans wasn’t necessarily bad—they would at least be free from pain. Zhao Yuanzhou instructed Wen Xiao to take Fan Ying and leave, while he and Zhuo Yichen led Wen Zongyu to Kunlun Mountain.

With his phoenix demon bones, Wen Zongyu was impervious to fire. However, the cold energy of Kunlun Mountain, combined with Zhuo Yichen’s mastery of Bingyi's divine power, offered an effective counter. As Zhao Yuanzhou taught Zhuo Yichen the Bingyi Sword Technique, Wen Zongyu gained the upper hand, attacking with fiery restraints that transmitted demon energy. The two were soon enveloped in the Poison of Enchantment.

Zhuo Yichen prepared to cut their wrists to use their blood as an antidote, but Zhao Yuanzhou suggested they might not be dreaming but merely poisoned. Suddenly, Bai Jiu appeared and neutralized the poison. They launched a pincer attack, with Zhuo Yichen stabbing Wen Zongyu in the abdomen from behind. However, they found the inner dan wasn’t located there. Zhao Yuanzhou realized that only the True Eye of Illusion or the Bai Ze Golden Eyes could reveal its exact location.
