During the day, Zhang Jinran was attacked, and in the evening, Yan Zijing hosted a banquet for him to calm his nerves. As they drank and chatted, Zhang Jinran reflected on Yan Zijing's methods. Recently, Yan Zijing had been relentlessly pressuring the Cui family, destroying the Pearl Tower and devising a plan at the auction that left Cui Shijiu's assets completely depleted—clearly, there was a deep grudge.

Yan Zijing didn’t give him a direct answer but provided a clue: Cui Shijiu had agreed to give another person dozens of tribute pearls annually, suggesting there was another party involved in this case. Zhang Jinran had found a sheepskin scroll at the Pearl Tower, with some details about Ba Niang. When Duan Wu saw the scroll, she noticed a Yan family hairpin and the name of a mysterious person, Yu Shi.

Duan Wu wondered if this Yu Shi could be her father. In her free time, she shared her suspicions with Yan Zijing. With the tribute pearls delayed, Cui Shijiu’s father would inevitably face punishment from the emperor. Unwilling to see her father punished, Cui Shijiu volunteered to take responsibility. Her father, knowing how to handle such matters, explained that he’d kept her out of the business because she was, after all, a woman. Kneeling before him, Cui Shijiu reminded him that years ago, Prince Tan had shown interest in her.

If she agreed to become his concubine, the family’s troubles could be resolved. Cui Shijiu’s father agreed, willing to sacrifice his daughter’s happiness to save the family. Duan Wu was thrilled with the gift, thinking it a kind gesture, and immediately crafted a wrist-mounted crossbow as a return gift. Recently, she’d been studying the writing on the sheepskin scroll and, recalling that Yan Zijing claimed he could read it, she went to him for guidance.
