After Cui Bagong fainted, he suddenly began having seizures, lying on the bed, gasping for breath with difficulty. His personal guards called many doctors, but none could help. Cui Shijiu was not surprised by Cui Bagong's sudden collapse. She prepared a herbal remedy and carefully gave it to him, which finally brought him around. Suspicious of the medicine, Cui Bagong's guard questioned her.

Cui Shijiu explained that all Cui family members suffer from a peculiar illness, which she herself experiences, so she always keeps a remedy on hand. The guard remained silent; regardless of whether her explanation was true, Cui Bagong now needed the cure she had. When her maid asked if she truly had the illness, Cui Shijiu recalled that her father once mentioned that horse chestnut could relieve Cui Bagong’s allergic reactions. This was only a temporary measure.

Yan Zijing planned to continue heading to the Western Regions to pursue Li Longdao. Duan Wu, seeking revenge for her father, pleaded with Yan Zijing to let her accompany him. The recently rescued Yue Yunxiu, temporarily homeless, also joined them as they left Guangzhou together. During the long journey, Yan Zijing, to pass the time, encouraged Duan Wu to learn how to brew tea.

Carefully following the steps, Duan Wu tried her hand at making tea for the first time, although she was unaccustomed to it and muttered that she came to learn business skills from Yan Zijing, not trivial tasks. Zhang Jinran, playfully mysterious, reminded her to focus on brewing tea first, promising that everything else would be negotiable. However, Duan Wu wasn’t so easily fooled, continuing to refill Yan Zijing's tea to curry favor.

Seeing her intentions, Yan Zijing teased her before starting to teach her how to recognize Nanyang gemstones. Duan Wu thought Yan Zijing’s character was like an emerald gem, while Zhang Jinran and Cui Shijiu were more like moonstones. Jokingly, she said that the emerald and moonstone made a fitting pair together. Yan Zijing, however, disagreed with her pairing, saying that pearls and gemstones together are even more dazzling. The convoy decided to rest, where they coincidentally encountered Zhang Jinran’s group.

Yue Yunxiu’s father, now a convicted criminal, was bound tightly to a cart, exposed to the elements. Zhang Jinran and Yan Zijing had a competition shooting at chickens. Yan Zijing, decisive and skilled, quickly hit his target, while Zhang Jinran, reluctant to kill, hesitated due to his compassion. Duan Wu asked Yan Zijing to teach her archery, which stirred jealousy in Zhang Jinran as he watched Yan Zijing and Duan Wu standing so close.

While resting, Zhang Jinran chatted with Duan Wu, telling her a story about a merman and a scholar. The two fell in love, but since the merman couldn’t come on land and the scholar couldn’t go to the sea, he traveled far and wide seeking a cure for the merman’s condition. Zhang Jinran found the story tragic, but Duan Wu didn’t see it that way.

She said that meeting each other was already a blessing, and people from different worlds shouldn’t force a connection. Zhang Jinran took the opportunity to confess to Duan Wu, but she responded graciously, remarking that real life isn’t like a legend and that many things ultimately succumb to cold reality. As Yan Zijing’s caravan continued on, they encountered Cao Da, a man who had once tried to steal treasures from the convoy when Yan Zijing was imprisoned.

After being expelled from the team, he wandered aimlessly. Seeing Yan Zijing again, Cao Da was overjoyed and asked to rejoin the convoy. Yan Zijing let Duan Wu decide, and she, letting go of past grudges, agreed to let Cao Da return. The convoy finally reached Wuling, where Yan Zijing observed many people praying and distributing congee. He guessed that someone important in the city was gravely ill. Zhang Jinran questioned Yan Zijing’s intentions in coming here.

Yan Zijing brushed it off, saying it was merely business, while Zhang Jinran reminded him that his own mission was to investigate by imperial order, and that he certainly wouldn’t be staying in the Octagonal Tower tonight.
