Duan Wu heard that among the high society of Hangzhou, the most famous figure was Yu Xiaoniang. If she could get Yu Xiaoniang to endorse her jewelry, it would be ideal. After finding out Yu Xiaoniang’s residence, Duan Wu and Yue Yunxiu set up a small stall nearby to sell their jewelry. Their chance soon arrived when Yu Xiaoniang accidentally broke a jade bracelet and asked her maid to take it outside to be repaired.

When the maid saw them selling jewelry outside the house, she naturally tried to drive them away. Duan Wu offered a small bribe and assured her they would repair the bracelet with care. The maid, whose pay was limited, was pleased with the fine jewelry they offered and readily handed over the bracelet for repair. Duan Wu personally designed a new look for the bracelet, while Yue Yunxiu carefully carved the piece according to the design.

In no time, the bracelet was beautifully restored, even more radiant than before.
