Zheng Zhiheng shared the confirmed information he had gathered with Cui Shijiu, confirming that Yan Zijing was indeed a member of the Yan family. Understanding the truth, Zheng Zhiheng felt sympathy for Yan Zijing, seeing him as an innocent victim. He asked Cui Shijiu about her plans. Cui Shijiu, being a ruthless person, warned him that the Zheng family would share the same fate as the Cui family if Yan Zijing wasn’t eliminated. Her words hardened Zheng Zhiheng’s resolve.

Initially, Duan Wu had promised Zheng Zhiheng six million in gold for his investment. However, she could only provide five million. Zheng Zhiheng immediately became hostile, demanding she secure the full amount at any cost. Duan Wu stood firm, stating five million was all she had and that she wouldn’t provide a cent more. Late at night, Duan Wu reviewed various jewelry-making techniques and called Yue Yunxiu to share her idea of producing colored glass. Since few in the market could make high-quality colored glass, introducing it could solve Mingjing Pavilion’s supply issues. Yue Yunxiu finally understood Duan Wu’s earlier statements to Zheng Zhiheng about temporarily pausing their business—it was a cover to buy time for researching colored glass production and to sever ties with the Zheng family completely.

Determined to eliminate Yan Zijing, Zheng Zhiheng devised a trap. Yan Zijing and Kang Ju, who were already seeking revenge, intended to use the opportunity to eradicate the Li Long bandits. However, the plan backfired, and they were ambushed instead. Yan Zijing and Kang Ju were locked inside a straw hut, which was soon set ablaze. Just as the two were about to be consumed by the flames, Yan Zijing’s contingency plan came into play.

His men attacked from the rear, enabling Kang Ju to carry the severely injured Yan Zijing to safety, narrowly escaping death. With the Li Long bandits surrounding Zhenlang Pavilion, Kang Ju had no choice but to take the wounded Yan Zijing to the neighboring Mingjing Pavilion. It was there that Duan Wu learned from Kang Ju about the events of that fateful night in the desert. The Li Long bandits had infiltrated the merchant caravan and launched a night raid.

Yan Zijing, aware of the bandits’ terrifying power, had deliberately distanced himself from Duan Wu to protect her. He didn’t want her to face such a formidable enemy, preferring that she live her life peacefully, even if it meant she would resent him. Realizing the truth, Duan Wu was both heartbroken and moved. It became clear that Yan Zijing had always cared deeply for her. Understanding his selfless intentions, Duan Wu felt more determined than ever in her choices.

Severely injured, Yan Zijing was weak after removing remnants of arrows from his body. Upon seeing Duan Wu’s expression, he immediately guessed that Kang Ju must have revealed everything to her. Yan Zijing reproached Kang Ju for acting without consulting him, but he acknowledged that Zhang Jinran had already uncovered the truth about the Li Long bandits infiltrating the caravan, making its exposure inevitable. Cui Shijiu urged Zheng Zhiheng to continue the pursuit.

Zheng Zhiheng, willing to escalate matters, even sought official intervention and enlisted Xu Nanying’s help. Xu Nanying led a group of guards to raid Mingjing Pavilion, but Zhang Jinran, dressed in sleepwear and appearing groggy, casually opened the door and asked why they were conducting a mission at his residence. Realizing the implications, Xu Nanying quickly retreated with his men in embarrassment. Zheng Zhiheng’s father was furious when he learned of the incident.

He slapped Zheng Zhiheng and scolded him for his recklessness. He warned that if Yan Zijing were to become their enemy, such open hostility would only worsen the situation. He reminded Zheng Zhiheng to handle matters discreetly and to avoid implicating the Zheng family in his actions. Disillusioned, Zheng Zhiheng realized that, like his late brother, he was merely a pawn for the family, with the Zheng family’s safety always taking precedence.
