In court, Bai Niao’s younger brother shifted all the blame onto his sister. He even went as far as accusing her of having an illicit relationship with Xu Nanying, claiming they had been secretly involved for years. Facing Bai Niao, he declared that her actions had brought shame to their family name. Bai Niao was heartbroken by her brother’s treachery. Although she protested her innocence, she accepted her punishment.

However, Zhang Jinran, guided by evidence, convicted her brother, who was ultimately imprisoned. Zhang Jinran quickly ordered Cui Shijiu to be brought in. At Bencao Jingshe, investigators found many pearls, which turned out to be tribute pearls. Zhang Jinran questioned Cui Shijiu, asking if she acknowledged her guilt. Cui Shijiu was baffled, insisting she had only taken over an empty store out of goodwill. Just then, Zheng Zhiheng appeared to testify, stating that Zhenlang Pavilion originally housed many jewels.

However, Xu Nanying had embezzled them, claiming he needed to hand over the jewels to reclaim the shop.
