In court, Bai Niao’s younger brother shifted all the blame onto his sister. He even went as far as accusing her of having an illicit relationship with Xu Nanying, claiming they had been secretly involved for years. Facing Bai Niao, he declared that her actions had brought shame to their family name. Bai Niao was heartbroken by her brother’s treachery. Although she protested her innocence, she accepted her punishment.

However, Zhang Jinran, guided by evidence, convicted her brother, who was ultimately imprisoned. Zhang Jinran quickly ordered Cui Shijiu to be brought in. At Bencao Jingshe, investigators found many pearls, which turned out to be tribute pearls. Zhang Jinran questioned Cui Shijiu, asking if she acknowledged her guilt. Cui Shijiu was baffled, insisting she had only taken over an empty store out of goodwill. Just then, Zheng Zhiheng appeared to testify, stating that Zhenlang Pavilion originally housed many jewels.

However, Xu Nanying had embezzled them, claiming he needed to hand over the jewels to reclaim the shop. Now, with Xu Nanying imprisoned for corruption, Bai Niao’s brother, Qin Mu, was released from jail. Immediately, he looted all the remaining gold and valuables, attempting to flee. Bai Niao, driven mad by her recent experiences, was fortunately sheltered by some courtesans.

Duan Wu allocated profits from her store to cover Bai Niao’s expenses, with the Piaoping Society ensuring her needs were met. Outraged by Qin Mu’s actions, the courtesans confronted him in the streets, gave him a sound beating, and reclaimed the stolen assets. Zheng Zhiheng publicly testified on behalf of Cui Shijiu, infuriating his father. Furious, Zheng’s father summoned both of them, scolded Zheng Zhiheng, and punished him with forty strokes.

Through this ordeal, Cui Shijiu came to see Zheng Zhiheng’s genuine feelings for her. Even in prison, Xu Nanying continued his scheming. Zhang Jinran visited him, trying to uncover the mastermind behind Xu Nanying’s actions, but Xu deflected the questions. Confident in the influence of his secret backers, Xu refused to cooperate. Zhang Jinran, unwilling to waste more time, petitioned the Dali Court to take over the case for direct oversight.

Meanwhile, Xu Nanying secretly wrote a blood-stained letter, hoping the prison guards would deliver it to Prince Ying. Zhang Jinran intercepted the letter and discovered that Xu Nanying had hidden a trusted aide, Xu Lin, outside the city during his posting to Hangzhou. This aide was a contingency plan, ready to approach Prince Ying at the right moment. Realizing the implications, Zhang Jinran acted swiftly. He composed an impeachment memorial and dispatched it to Chang’an with express urgency.

Cui Shijiu successfully reopened Zhenlang Pavilion, and Zheng Zhiheng attended the opening to offer his congratulations. After everything they had been through, Cui Shijiu finally accepted Zheng Zhiheng’s feelings and brought him back to Zhenlang Pavilion to recover from his injuries. Duan Wu personally visited Qin Aweng three times to seek his help. Moved by her sincerity, Qin Aweng finally agreed and drafted blueprints for a furnace to refine glass for Mingjing Pavilion.

During the furnace’s construction, Kang Ju and Yan Zijing provided significant assistance. Their teamwork brought everyone closer, and for the first time, Kang Ju and Yan Zijing felt a sense of family. Officials from the Dali Court arrived to escort Xu Nanying to the capital, but they found him gravely ill and unable to move. After their departure, Zhang Jinran questioned the doctor, who confirmed that Xu Nanying had been poisoned and would require extensive rest and care.

Recognizing that someone was acting quickly to silence Xu Nanying, Zhang Jinran realized Prince Ying might have caught wind of the investigation.
