> The Story of Pearl Girl Recap

Zheng Zhiheng and Cui Shijiu had been hiding in the thatched hut for two days, their stomachs growling with hunger. Zheng Zhiheng pawned his ring and secretly bought two steamed buns for Cui Shijiu. When Cui Shijiu woke up and didn’t see Zheng Zhiheng nearby, she thought he had abandoned her. But he soon returned and gave her both buns, not keeping any for himself.

Zhang Jinran received a report that the Zheng family had dispatched two sedan chairs overnight, suspecting someone had located Zheng Zhiheng. He prepared to gather his men to make an arrest. However, just then, officials from the Ministry of Justice arrived, demanding to take Xu Nanying into custody immediately. Zhang Jinran blocked their way, even as they waved an imperial edict, claiming the emperor’s orders.

Zhang Jinran understood the importance of Xu Nanying to his case and refused to let him go. A tense standoff ensued, but it was broken when an imperial decree arrived. The emperor directly supported Zhang Jinran, commanding him to conduct a fair investigation and to interrogate Xu Nanying on the spot. Faced with this decree, the Ministry of Justice officials had no choice but to retreat. Zheng Shiyuan, Zheng Zhiheng’s father, was the first to find their hiding place.

He tied up Cui Shijiu and forced Zheng Zhiheng to return home with him. Zheng Shiyuan tried to convince his son to shift all the blame onto Cui Shijiu, promising that he could still inherit the family’s jewelry business. However, Zheng Zhiheng, deeply in love with Cui Shijiu, could never bring himself to harm her or let her bear all the blame.

When Zheng Shiyuan attempted to drag him away, Zheng Zhiheng pulled out a dagger and wounded his father, warning him never to harm Cui Shijiu. Zheng Shiyuan was stunned by his son’s actions. Suddenly, a spear flew through the air and pierced Zheng Zhiheng’s chest. Zheng Shiyuan froze in shock. Though he had often been ruthless, watching his only son die before his eyes was something he couldn’t accept.

Turning around, he saw a figure in black disappearing into the distance, finally realizing who was behind this attack. Overcome with rage and grief, he ordered his men to set the thatched hut on fire, intending to bury Cui Shijiu alongside Zheng Zhiheng. After Zheng Shiyuan left, Zheng Zhiheng faintly regained consciousness. Knowing he couldn’t let Cui Shijiu perish in the flames, he tried to remove the spear from his chest but lacked the strength.

With sheer determination, he pulled his body away from the spear, freeing himself. Cui Shijiu, her mouth gagged, watched him struggle in agony. Zheng Zhiheng used a knife to cut the ropes binding her and urged her to escape while she could. Flames engulfed the hut as Cui Shijiu supported Zheng Zhiheng in their escape. But as they made their way out, a burning beam fell.

With his last ounce of strength, Zheng Zhiheng pushed Cui Shijiu to safety before succumbing to his injuries. Zhang Jinran apprehended Zheng Shiyuan and interrogated him about the source of the stolen goods. Zheng Shiyuan, without hesitation, shifted all the blame onto his late son, Zheng Zhiheng. Zhang Jinran then summoned Cui Shijiu as a witness. Unexpectedly, she confirmed Zheng Shiyuan’s version of events, stating that all he said was true.

Cui Shijiu, understanding Zheng Zhiheng’s devotion to his father, knew he would have wanted his father to stay safe. After returning home, Zheng Shiyuan mobilized all his household staff and offered a large reward for anyone who could kill Duan Wu and Yan Zijing. However, not a single person dared to take on the task.
