Wei Wuxian had feared nothing in his life except for dogs. The moment he saw Fairy, the large dog, he was scared out of his wits and fled in terror, shaking all over and loudly calling for Lan Wangji to save him. Lan Wangji descended from the sky and blocked Wei Wuxian, causing Fairy to tuck its tail and run away. Knowing Lan Wangji's strength, Jin Ling had no choice but to leave in frustration.

A wandering charlatan, seeing that Wei Wuxian had driven Jin Ling away, was immensely grateful and took the opportunity to share news of recent strange occurrences. He spoke of a place five or six miles away called Xinglu Ridge, also known as Man-Eating Ridge. It was said that there was a Man-Eating Fortress there, inhabited by monsters that specifically preyed on humans—a truly terrifying place.

Wei Wuxian continued to probe further, questioning why the Qinghe Nie Clan, under whose territory Xinglu Ridge fell, would allow such a threat to persist. The charlatan sneered, saying that if it were the Nie Clan of the past, they would have swiftly eliminated the monsters without hesitation. However, the current clan leader, Nie Huaisang, was ignorant of everything—weak and incapable of handling affairs. There was no hope of him undertaking such a major task.

As Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji journeyed on, Wei Wuxian sighed with emotion, surprised that after sixteen years, Nie Huaisang had become the clan leader. Lan Wangji had only heard that Nie Mingjue had succumbed to qi deviation and died suddenly in public, leading to Nie Huaisang’s succession. However, he did not know the details of the event. Curious, Lan Wangji asked why Wei Wuxian was so afraid of dogs.

Initially reluctant to speak, Wei Wuxian finally revealed that when he was young, he often had to snatch food from vicious dogs, which led to his deep-seated fear. Just then, the barking of Fairy rang out again. Frightened, Wei Wuxian hid behind Lan Wangji, but the dog did not charge at them. Lan Wangji scanned their mist-filled surroundings and deduced that despite Fairy being a spiritual dog, it could not find a way in.

Relieved, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji soon discovered an ancient fortress with a gaping hole in its wall. They immediately understood—Jin Ling must have dug the entrance open and entered, leaving Fairy outside in distress. Without delay, the two hurried inside. The fortress was lined with stone walls, and sharp ghostly wails echoed in Wei Wuxian’s ears, making him feel dizzy. He deduced that a powerful spiritual entity was present.

Sure enough, as they ventured further, they discovered numerous stone coffins. However, instead of corpses, the coffins were filled with sharp swords. Seeing this, Lan Wangji played his guqin to communicate with the spirits within the fortress and gather clues. To their surprise, the spirit that responded knew nothing about the fortress, leaving both Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji puzzled and disappointed.

As they pressed on with their inquiries, the spirit revealed that a fifteen or sixteen-year-old boy had indeed entered the fortress and was still inside. Disbelieving, Wei Wuxian searched further but found nothing. Lan Wangji cautiously asked the spirit its age and origin, only to receive a shocking reply—the spirit was a sixteen-year-old from Lanling. Wei Wuxian was stunned—this spirit was actually Jin Ling! Following the spirit’s guidance, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji finally found Jin Ling trapped within the walls.

He was barely alive—had they not dug him out in time, he might have perished. While Lan Wangji channeled spiritual energy into him, Wei Wuxian searched further inside the walls, only to uncover countless corpses that had long since turned to bones, each frozen in different postures. Suddenly, Jin Ling’s eyes snapped open, and in a daze, he began walking toward the walls again. Wei Wuxian quickly stopped him, and together with Lan Wangji, carried him out of the fortress.

At that moment, they caught a glimpse of a mysterious figure flashing past. Lan Wangji immediately pursued the person while Wei Wuxian focused on finding a place to settle Jin Ling. After placing Jin Ling on a bed, Wei Wuxian intended to remove his shoes and socks. However, he was shocked to find ominous curse marks on Jin Ling’s legs. Quickly unfastening Jin Ling’s robe, he was relieved to see that the marks had not yet spread to his chest.

When Jin Ling awoke, he saw Wei Wuxian undressing him and, overcome with embarrassment and anger, bolted away in an instant. Wei Wuxian stood up to chase him, only to spot Jiang Cheng approaching with Jin Ling. He hurriedly hid, thinking he could escape Jiang Cheng’s notice, but when he turned his head, he was face-to-face with Fairy. Terrified, he screamed and dashed out, only to be forced into revealing his identity when Jiang Cheng confronted him.

Jiang Cheng’s eyes widened, filled with a mixture of joy and anger. Jiang Cheng took Wei Wuxian back and interrogated him, demanding an explanation. He even let Fairy loose inside to frighten him. In his panic, Wei Wuxian instinctively called out for his senior sister, Jiang Yanli, which only infuriated Jiang Cheng further. Jiang Cheng dredged up grievances from sixteen years ago and berated Wei Wuxian endlessly, even scolding him for the harsh words he had spoken to Jin Ling.

Remorse washed over Wei Wuxian as he recalled how he had once insulted Jin Ling, saying that he had a mother who gave birth to him but none to raise him. Guilt overwhelmed him. Jiang Cheng then demanded to know Wen Ning’s whereabouts. Wei Wuxian genuinely did not know, but Jiang Cheng refused to believe him. At that moment, Jin Ling entered, claiming that he had encountered Wen Ning earlier.

Jiang Cheng believed him and immediately used Zidian to bind Wei Wuxian before setting off to capture Wen Ning and exact vengeance. Once Jiang Cheng left, Jin Ling secretly released Wei Wuxian and led him to the forest, repaying him for saving his life earlier. Wei Wuxian sincerely apologized to Jin Ling, admitting that he should never have spoken such hurtful words on Dafan Mountain.

Jin Ling bit his lip—this was not the first time he had been the subject of whispers and mockery. One day, he would prove that he was stronger than anyone else. Watching Jin Ling’s proud and stubborn demeanor, Wei Wuxian subtly knocked him unconscious and transferred the curse marks onto himself.
