The Untamed Episode 43 Recap
> The Untamed Recap
Wei Wuxian deduced from the missing page in Luan Po Chao that Jin Guangyao must have secretly torn out the section recording the demonic melody, taken it away to practice, and blended it into Qingxin Yin. This way, even if the truth were exposed in the future, the origin of the altered melody would be impossible to trace. At this point, Lan Xichen still refused to believe that Jin Guangyao was a villain. Wei Wuxian helplessly remarked that Jin Guangyao had once been an undercover agent in Buye Tian and had even found Wen Ruohan’s secret chamber—how could he not be capable of sneaking into something as minor as the Lan Clan’s library chamber?
Lan Xichen’s gaze grew heavy. He was well aware that more and more clues pointed toward Jin Guangyao. However, in Lan Xichen’s mind, Jin Guangyao was someone who endured humiliation, cared for the people, and respected both the powerful and the weak. It was difficult for him to believe that such a person could have orchestrated the death of Nie Mingjue and woven such an intricate web of schemes. After much deliberation, Lan Xichen decided to proceed with caution before making any judgments.
Wei Wuxian privately asked Lan Xichen why Lan Wangji had whip scars on his body. With a sigh, Lan Xichen recounted the events. The battle at Buye Tian had been devastating. After the war, Jin Guangyao led people to search Luanzang Gang’s Demon-Suppressing Cave, but Lan Wangji had fought desperately to stop him, preventing the search. However, Lan Wangji’s defiance had caused a massive uproar. Lan Qiren, furious, took Lan Wangji back to Cloud Recesses and punished him with three hundred strikes of the discipline whip, forcing him into seclusion in the Cold Pool Cave. Yet even while enduring his punishment, Lan Wangji refused to admit fault, which only further enraged Lan Qiren and left him deeply disappointed.
Hearing all this, Wei Wuxian felt both touched and melancholic. Staring at the tranquil chamber before him, Lan Xichen revealed that this was the residence of his and Lan Wangji’s biological mother. It turned out that their father had fallen in love with their mother at first sight. However, due to past grudges in the martial world, their mother had killed a respected elder of the Lan Clan. Though deeply pained, their father had defied all opposition and brought her back to Cloud Recesses, marrying her against the wishes of the clan and treating her as his lifelong love. To avoid public scrutiny, he and their mother secluded themselves in this chamber and never emerged—even when Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji were born, they were handed over to Lan Qiren for care. As a result, Lan Qiren harbored great resentment toward their mother, which only deepened his hatred for those who practiced unorthodox methods or had questionable morals.
Later, when their mother passed away, Lan Wangji was devastated. No matter the weather, he would come to this chamber every month, sitting alone in the corridor, burdened with longing. Lan Xichen shared this story to help Wei Wuxian understand that when Lan Wangji first discovered Wei Wuxian practicing demonic cultivation, he had struggled deeply with it. Now, Lan Xichen found himself in a similar dilemma—after believing for years that he understood Jin Guangyao, he was realizing he might have been completely wrong. Perhaps, in the end, human nature was like fire when viewed head-on and ice when seen from the side.
Wei Wuxian went to find Lan Wangji to thank him, but when the words reached his lips, he found them too sentimental and swallowed them back. It seemed Lan Wangji had expected him to come—he had already prepared Emperor’s Smile. Wei Wuxian drank it all in one gulp, and the two of them discussed the mysterious flute melody that had appeared at Qiongqi Path and Buye Tian, both finding it puzzling. Back in the battle at Buye Tian, Wei Wuxian had lost control of Chenqing—now it was clear that someone had played another melody at the time. It must have been Jin Guangyao playing Luan Po Chao, which had thrown everything into chaos, making it impossible to turn back.
Leaning against the railing, Wei Wuxian drank Emperor’s Smile in large gulps. Over the years, so many who had loved him were now gone, but at least Lan Wangji was still by his side. A true confidant in life was enough. Moved by this thought, Wei Wuxian said, “I’m sorry. Thank you.” Lan Wangji lifted his gaze—he was willing to always trust and stand by Wei Wuxian.
Jin Guangyao visited the Lan Clan and returned to Lan Xichen the jade token that had once granted him free passage. He then told Lan Xichen that Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian were still missing, and since the other sects suspected the Lan Clan, Lan Xichen should allow a search to prove their innocence. Lan Xichen remained noncommittal, so Jin Guangyao continued, saying that many more puppets had appeared, all heading toward Luanzang Gang. He suggested that it must be Wei Wuxian activating an array and causing trouble, and that another siege of Luanzang Gang seemed imminent. Jin Guangyao invited all clan leaders to Jinlintai to discuss the matter and asked if Lan Xichen would attend.
Lan Xichen nodded slightly, agreeing to go. Jin Guangyao’s face revealed a meaningful smile as he added that he would also be holding a burial for Nie Mingjue and hoped Lan Xichen would come to send him off. After Jin Guangyao left, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian emerged from behind a screen. The group prepared to split up, and Lan Xichen clenched his teeth—if Jin Guangyao truly was beyond redemption, he would not show mercy.
And so, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian set off, leading the little donkey, Lil Apple. Amidst the green mountains and flowing waters, Wei Wuxian played a cheerful tune, while Lan Wangji walked steadily beside him, utterly at ease. Suddenly, inspiration struck Wei Wuxian—he finally realized how Lan Wangji had recognized him. That day at Dafan Mountain, he had played the same melody that Lan Wangji had once hummed in Xuanwu Cave. Yet to this day, Wei Wuxian still did not know the name of that tune.
As they traveled, the two chatted and soon arrived at a farmhouse, hoping to ask for some water. Finding no one home, Wei Wuxian playfully picked up a watermelon. Just then, a couple returned, carrying a child. The two of them quickly hid behind a haystack and listened as the couple used the legend of the Yiling Patriarch to scare their child. Curious, Wei Wuxian peeked out and was astonished to see that the woman, named Qingyang, was actually Mianmian.
