The Untamed Episode 44 Recap
> The Untamed Recap
Mianmian was overjoyed to see Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji. She introduced her husband to them—though he was not from the cultivation world, he was honest and kind-hearted, and now accompanied her on night hunts. Wei Wuxian crouched down to look at Mianmian’s adorable young daughter and wanted to give her a New Year's gift. Lan Wangji immediately took out some silver and handed it to Wei Wuxian to give to the child.
Mianmian told them that there were rumors of walking corpses appearing outside the city, but despite searching for a long time, she had yet to find any. Just as she finished speaking, a terrifying scream came from not far away. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji hurried over, only to discover that the one shouting was actually Wen Ning. Wen Ning had his hair disheveled and was covered in dirt and mud, having camouflaged himself with weeds.
Wei Wuxian couldn't help but laugh, thinking Wen Ning had been robbed. Wen Ning cautiously explained that he had been secretly following Wei Wuxian all along and had been dealing with walking corpses along the way, which left him in this sorry state. Wei Wuxian sighed softly—he had told Wen Ning to find a place to hide, but Wen Ning still followed him. Since that was the case, they might as well travel together.
The three of them soon arrived in Yiling, a place filled with memories and emotions. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji had once shared tea here and played with Wen Yuan, but that was a long time ago. The thought of Wen Yuan filled Wei Wuxian with sorrow—if Wen Yuan were still alive, he would be in his teens by now. Lan Wangji parted his lips as if wanting to say something but ultimately remained silent.
The surroundings of Yiling were far from peaceful. They encountered many walking corpses and only managed to escape after a fierce battle. Upon reaching the mountain, they discovered that sections of the surrounding walls had been knocked down—clearly, someone had arrived before them. Years had passed, and Burial Mound was now in ruins. The lotus flowers and lotus roots that had once been painstakingly cultivated were long gone.
As Wei Wuxian gazed at the desolate scene, he seemed to hear the laughter of the past, filling him with sorrow. Suddenly, a group of walking corpses lunged at them. Wen Ning engaged them in battle, while Lan Wangji handed Suibian to Wei Wuxian for self-defense. Wei Wuxian drew the sword, but his posture was unfamiliar, and his spiritual energy was weak, surprising Lan Wangji.
Wei Wuxian quickly covered it up, claiming that Mo Xuanyu’s body had low spiritual energy and couldn't unleash Suibian’s full power. After dealing with the walking corpses, they entered the Demon Subduing Cave and were shocked to find Sizhui, Jin Ling, and others tied up, unable to move. Some Jin clan disciples mistakenly thought that Wei Wuxian had captured them and immediately hurled insults at him.
Jin Ling couldn't bear to listen any longer and spoke up to stop their arrogance, only to be insulted in return—mocked as someone who "had a mother but was not raised by her. " This remark struck Jin Ling's sore spot, and he furiously struggled, ready to fight. Wei Wuxian heard everything clearly. He walked over and handed Suibian to Wen Ning.
Wen Ning stepped forward with his sword, causing the younger cultivators to tremble in fear at the sight of the Ghost General. However, Wen Ning only cut the ropes cleanly without harming anyone. Sizhui was delighted to see Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji, while Jin Ling wore a cold expression. His feelings toward Wei Wuxian were conflicted—on one hand, he resented him for causing his parents' deaths, but on the other, he didn’t believe Wei Wuxian was truly a villain.
The Demon Subduing Cave was narrow and dark, so the group decided to escape. Wen Ning volunteered to drive away the walking corpses but soon returned—several prominent clans had gathered at Burial Mound, forcing him to retreat. Wei Wuxian told Wen Ning to hide, while he and Lan Wangji led the younger cultivators out. The disciples of the great clans saw Lan Wangji standing firmly by Wei Wuxian’s side and criticized him for disgracing his reputation as a noble cultivator.
However, no matter how they condemned him, Lan Wangji remained cold and unwavering at Wei Wuxian’s side. Wei Wuxian was puzzled not to see Lan Xichen or Jin Guangyao among the crowd. He soon learned that both had been ambushed at Jinlintai and were seriously injured.
Meanwhile, Nie Huaisang, known for his cluelessness, had shown up at Burial Mound as well, though he still played the same timid and noncommittal role, claiming he was just there to make up the numbers. Among the disciples was a man named Yi Weichun, who had lost a leg in the Battle of Nightless City. He loudly demanded vengeance against Wei Wuxian.
Others, despite having no personal grievances with Wei Wuxian, self-righteously declared that he must die for the sake of justice. Wei Wuxian sternly refuted their baseless accusations, asserting that he would not accept a crime he had not committed. He pointed out that the murder of Nie Mingjue, Qin Su’s suicide, and the gathering of walking corpses had nothing to do with him. But despite his reasoning, the crowd refused to believe him.
Wei Wuxian continued, saying that in the years he had been gone, someone had secretly kept Wen Ning hidden while publicly claiming he had been destroyed. Clearly, this person had ulterior motives. At that moment, another wave of walking corpses attacked. The cultivators engaged in battle but soon found themselves poisoned, losing their spiritual energy. They had no choice but to retreat into the Demon Subduing Cave.
Wei Wuxian looked at them and found their attitude laughable—despite being in such dire straits, they still guarded against him. If he truly wanted to harm them, who among them could stop him? Among them, Su She kept provoking and taunting. Lan Wangji, with an icy expression, silenced him with a spell. Su She clutched his throat, glaring hatefully at Lan Wangji.
Wei Wuxian seized the moment to bring up Su She’s past betrayal of the Lan Clan, causing a heated argument between the Lan disciples and Su She’s followers. During the quarrel, someone pointed out that the Suppressing Evil Melody played by Su She had been full of flaws. Wei Wuxian was suddenly struck with realization—he understood how they had been poisoned. When they had fought the walking corpses earlier, Su She had pretended to use his guqin to exorcise them.
In reality, he had subtly altered the melody, inserting a tune that temporarily disabled spiritual energy. The Lan Clan, though they might have noticed something off, would have assumed it was due to Su She’s lack of skill, never suspecting he was deliberately setting a trap. Exposed by Wei Wuxian, Su She’s face darkened, and he vehemently denied the accusation, claiming he had never studied forbidden melodies in the Lan Clan. Wei Wuxian smiled slightly—why would Su She need to enter the Lan Clan’s library himself when his master had access to it?
