Luo Ruohui discovered that He Shenwei had secretly taken money from the accounting room and also found a woman’s handkerchief hidden on him. Suspecting that He Shenwei was having an affair, she wrote a letter to Luo Ruolan. However, He Shenwei intercepted the letter and forged another one in Luo Ruohui's handwriting, reassuring Luo Ruolan that everything was fine.

Hua Miao, worried that Luo Ruohui might uncover his and He Shenwei’s conspiracy to seize the Luo family’s winery, decided to poison her and prepared a dose of poison. He Shenwei brought the poisoned medicine to Luo Ruohui. Though Luo Ruohui was already weak, she adamantly refused to drink the medicine. She persistently questioned He Shenwei, asking if he had a change of heart. He Shenwei confessed without hesitation and forcibly made Luo Ruohui drink the poisoned medicine.

Luo Ruohui soon succumbed to the poison and passed away. When Luo Ruolan heard He Shenwei’s account, she was so enraged that she drew her knife to kill him and avenge her sister, Luo Ruohui. Luo Shu desperately stopped her. He Shenwei shifted all the blame onto Hua Miao, who tried to defend himself. He Shenwei publicly exposed Hua Miao as the second-in-command of the White Ant Gang, known as the White Fan.

Although Hua Miao denied the accusation, He Shenwei declared himself Hua Miao’s pawn. Out of consideration for Qiu Niang, who was pregnant with his child, He Shenwei decided to show Hua Miao leniency. Qiu Niang then stepped forward and revealed that her child was not He Shenwei’s, leaving him dumbfounded as he realized he had fallen into Hua Miao and Qiu Niang’s trap. Hua Miao berated He Shenwei, mocking him as being worse than a dog.

Humiliated, He Shenwei drew his knife and stabbed Hua Miao. Meanwhile, Luo Ruolan brought Luo Shu to the winery, where she reminisced about the times she and her sister played there as children, leaving her with mixed emotions. Luo Shu encouraged Luo Ruolan to stay strong and not let her sister’s expectations down. Hua Miao was thrown into prison but refused to confess his crimes.

Han Muzhi explained the severity of the situation to him, but Hua Miao remained defiant and argued back. Under Han Muzhi’s orders, Hua Miao was subjected to severe torture, finally confessing to numerous crimes, including abducting women with the help of the White Ant Gang. Han Muzhi vowed to eradicate the White Ants from the city entirely.

Chen Meiqing urged him to reconsider, recounting an incident from five years prior when the governor’s attempt to suppress the White Ants ended with him being ambushed in the bustling city square, leading to his deafness and eventual departure from Linfen. However, Han Muzhi was resolute, unwilling to tolerate further crimes. Chen Meiqing suspected that Han Muzhi’s determination was because of Luo Shu.

Han Muzhi wrote to the Pingyang Guard in Taiyuan seeking reinforcements and waited at the county office for a response. Luo Shu, sensing his burden, played an old tune on her pipa to ease his mind. Soon, good news arrived: the Pingyang Guard had successfully cleared out the White Ant Gang. Han Muzhi personally went to the county office gate to welcome the victorious soldiers, only to find that their leader was Qi Menglin.

Now the deputy commander of the Pingyang Guard, Qi Menglin had led his troops to eliminate the White Ants. The citizens lined the streets to welcome their heroes. Han Muzhi expressed his gratitude to Qi Menglin for clearing out the White Ant Gang, which had plagued Linfen for over a decade. Luo Shu oversaw the imprisonment of the captured White Ant members and reported back to Han Muzhi.

Qi Menglin, eager to boast, tried to impress Luo Shu, who ignored him completely. Meanwhile, Chen Meiqing’s father arrived at the county office with a flock of sheep, pressuring Chen Meiqing to return home and marry Zao Hua. Before leaving, his father even left a sheep to help Chen Meiqing regain his health. Chen Meiqing, desperate to avoid the marriage, was dismayed that his father had come to force the issue. Han Muzhi hosted a banquet to celebrate Qi Menglin’s success.

Qi Menglin bragged excessively about his military achievements, prompting Lian Shu to expose his shortcomings. Annoyed, Qi Menglin told Lian Shu to keep quiet. Luo Shu congratulated Qi Menglin, and Cai Baozi pleaded with him to treat everyone to a performance by the Taiyuan Opera Troupe. Qi Menglin readily agreed and curiously inquired about Chen Meiqing’s fiancée. Cai Baozi joined in teasing, prompting Chen Meiqing to angrily take the lamb dish away, silencing them.

After the banquet, Han Muzhi and Luo Shu played chess in the courtyard. Luo Shu thanked Han Muzhi on behalf of the women of Linfen. Han Muzhi made it clear that his efforts to suppress the White Ants were all for Luo Shu. He confessed his feelings to her directly, catching her off guard, and gave her a day to think it over. Outside, Chen Meiqing overheard their conversation.

Chen Meiqing confronted Luo Shu, urging her to give up on Han Muzhi. He revealed that Han Muzhi was already engaged to Liu Wan, the daughter of Governor Liu Yiqing. Even if Luo Shu became Han Muzhi’s concubine, Liu Yiqing would never agree, and if Han Muzhi insisted on marrying her, it would ruin his future.

Chen Meiqing, having noticed Luo Shu’s feelings for Han Muzhi, swore to do whatever it took to stop them and advised Luo Shu to let Han Muzhi move on. Luo Shu had developed feelings for Han Muzhi over time, but Chen Meiqing’s words awakened her to reality. She decided not to meet Han Muzhi as planned. Han Muzhi waited for her late into the night, only to be disappointed when she did not show up.

Later, he learned from Cai Baozi that Qi Menglin had invited everyone to watch an opera. Luo Shu agreed to go, and Han Muzhi arrived at the theater early to wait for her. When Luo Shu appeared, Qi Menglin treated everyone to a performance of *The Purple Hairpin. * However, Han Muzhi had no interest in the opera; his gaze remained fixed on Luo Shu, trying to discern her feelings, but Luo Shu avoided his eyes.

The opera told the story of a man who gave up a governor’s daughter to marry a like-minded commoner. Luo Shu left halfway through, followed by Han Muzhi. She found herself at the chessboard again. Han Muzhi confronted her about missing their meeting the previous night. Luo Shu explained that she didn’t want to become a concubine or hinder his future and wished for someone who would love her wholeheartedly.

Overhearing their conversation, Qi Menglin silently resolved to pursue Luo Shu. From that day forward, Luo Shu let go of her feelings for Han Muzhi and regarded him only as her superior.
