Qin Yi sent someone to investigate the cause of Luo Shu's parents' deaths. He discovered that thirteen years ago, Xu Biao, a gambler who had taken Luo Qingfeng to the Changsheng Gambling House, was also a minor official in charge of the grain warehouse. Xu Biao and Luo Qingfeng had been colleagues, and the Qi family had instructed Xu Biao to take Luo Qingfeng to the gambling house. Xu Biao, now gravely ill, deeply regretted his actions from that time.

Qin Yi asked him to tell Luo Shu the truth. Xu Biao was curious about why Qin Yi wanted to do this, so Qin Yi admitted that he had a grudge against the Qi family. The Qi family had caused the destruction of his wife's family. Qin Yi gave Xu Biao a large sum of money, promising to buy a large house for his wife and children and provide them with monthly living expenses, ensuring they would never go hungry.

Lian Qi learned that Qin Yi was searching for Xu Biao and immediately reported it to Qi Yanjin. Qi Yanjin ordered Lian Qi to pass on a message to Xu Biao, saying that he had asked a relative in the military camp for some stone pitch. Qi Yanjin arranged everything and only then informed Qi Menglin about finding Xu Biao. At the same time, Qin Yi told Luo Shu where to find Xu Biao.

Qi Menglin hurried over, claiming that his second brother, Qi Yanjin, had helped find Xu Biao's residence. Qi Yanjin and Qin Yi took Qi Menglin and Luo Shu to Xu Biao’s home. Xu Biao struggled to get out of bed and knelt before Luo Shu, confessing his sins. He admitted that he had taken Luo Qingfeng to the gambling house, where Luo Qingfeng won a lot of money.

That night, Xu Biao had gone to the Luo family’s house to steal money but failed, and in a fit of rage, he set fire to the house. Because of the rain, the fire didn’t catch, so he went back home to get stone pitch to set the fire. Xu Biao, filled with guilt, ended his life by slamming his head into a pillar, dying on the spot. Luo Shu was devastated upon learning the truth about her parents' deaths.

She fell into a deep sorrow and fell ill. Qi Menglin took her back to the inn, staying by her side. Luo Shu woke up, still in a daze, and as she thought more about it, something didn’t feel right. It seemed too coincidental that the murderer, Xu Biao, was found so quickly and died so easily.

Luo Shu couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off, especially since Xu Biao’s face had been filled with fear before his death, and he kept mentioning his family. Qi Menglin also found it strange. Qi Menglin and Luo Shu visited Xu Biao’s home again, only to find it empty. From the neighbors, they learned that shortly after Xu Biao’s death, his wife and children were taken away.

Luo Shu remembered what Aunt Guo had said: the rain had only come after their house had caught fire. But Xu Biao had claimed that the rain had prevented the fire from starting, which led him to use stone pitch. Luo Shu suspected that either Xu Biao or Aunt Guo was lying. She decided to confront Aunt Guo. When Qi Menglin and Luo Shu arrived at the Guo family’s house, they saw that a large mourning tent had been set up.

The neighbors told them that Uncle Guo and Aunt Guo had both died from gas poisoning and were already buried. Their son had gone out of town. Luo Shu was stunned. She had finally found a clue, only for it to be cut off completely. Qin Yi confronted Qi Yanjin about bribing Xu Biao to fabricate evidence. Qi Yanjin reluctantly agreed to give Qin Yi a salt transport permit for a year.

Qin Yi, still dissatisfied, was warned by Qi Yanjin not to be greedy. Qi Yanjin offered peace, and Qin Yi reluctantly agreed. Luo Shu recalled Jin Miaocui’s words, urging her never to return to Taiyuan and not to trust anyone. Qi Menglin comforted Luo Shu, encouraging her not to lose hope. They would continue to look for new clues.

Luo Shu wanted to return to Mingke Fang in Linfen, as Fifth Concubine had left her a large sum of money after her death, enough to buy her freedom. Despite her efforts over the years, Luo Shu had never been able to succeed. She always felt as though invisible hands were controlling her life. Qi Menglin agreed to go with her to Linfen. Luo Shu advised Qi Menglin not to spend money recklessly and reminded him to treat his grandmother well.

Qi Menglin readily agreed and promised to give her a home. On the day of the Zhongyuan Festival, Luo Shu asked Qi Menglin to accompany her to the Taiyuan flower fair. Qi Menglin, of course, was eager to join. He dressed up carefully and accompanied Luo Shu to enjoy the festival. The flower fair in Taiyuan was bustling with activity. The streets were crowded, and Qi Menglin, unable to hold back his feelings, kissed Luo Shu.

Luo Shu pushed him away and slapped him hard, then ran off. Qi Menglin quickly gave chase, but she disappeared into the crowd. When Qi Menglin returned to the inn, he found no trace of her and guessed that she had gone to Linfen. Downcast, he returned home, only to be harshly scolded by the family patriarch. Qi Menglin decided to leave for Linfen early the next morning, but the patriarch adamantly refused, berating him for not understanding proper manners.

Qi Menglin argued, and the patriarch, enraged, raised his hand to strike him. His older brother quickly intervened, pleading on his behalf. The Qi family was in a delicate situation, and any mistake could lead to irreversible consequences. Qi Menglin could not remain uninvolved. The patriarch ordered him to stay at home from now on, but Qi Menglin refused. The patriarch, furious, nearly lost his temper. His older brother, coughing uncontrollably, intervened again.

The patriarch, softened by his brother’s plea, allowed Qi Menglin to escort him back to his room. Luo Shu arrived in Linfen and found a guesthouse run by Qiao Ruolan. Qiao Ruolan was overjoyed and offered Luo Shu a room. Luo Shu then went to Mingke Fang to find Jin Miaocui, but Yu Mama tried to block her at every turn. Luo Shu offered to pay, intending to buy Jin Miaocui's freedom.

Yu Mama advised her to give up, but Jin Miaocui agreed to follow Luo Shu back to Mingke Fang. Luo Shu took out all her silver notes, but Yu Mama remained firm and forcibly kicked her out.
