Yu Mama confessed that the true master of Mingke Fang was Manager Li, who had killed Fifth Madam. Luo Shu learned that Manager Li was a subordinate of Qin Yi. Yu Mama explained the events leading up to the situation. Qin Yi had sent Luo Shu to Mingke Fang to temper her temperament, but Luo Shu secretly ran away and sought refuge at the county office.

Manager Li blamed Yu Mama for losing control over Luo Shu, and though Yu Mama didn’t dare to demand Luo Shu’s return from the county office, she apologized repeatedly to placate Manager Li. One day, Yu Mama overheard movement outside. When she went out to investigate, she saw Mulan passing by. Yu Mama interrogated Mulan, who firmly denied overhearing her conversation with Manager Li. Manager Li noticed that Mulan, sent by Qin Yi, bore a striking resemblance to Luo Shu.

He advised Yu Mama to carefully cultivate Mulan, believing that Mulan could help restore their standing with Qin Yi if nurtured properly. Yu Mama, terrified, repeatedly assured him she would do so. Shortly after, Yu Mama discovered that Mulan had grown close to Jin Miaocui. Jin Miaocui even wrote a letter, asking Xiao Mian’ao to deliver it to Captain Cai at the county office.

Yu Mama intercepted and read the letter, learning that Jin Miaocui had overheard her conversation with Manager Li. When Manager Li found out, he ordered Jin Miaocui’s death to silence her. Reluctant to lose a valuable asset, Yu Mama moved Jin Miaocui to a secluded courtyard. When Luo Shu visited to see Jin Miaocui, Jin Miaocui secretly arranged for a porter to deliver a message. Cornered, Yu Mama was forced to send Qiao Si’er to kill Jin Miaocui.

Yu Mama knelt on the ground, pleading with Luo Shu to spare her, claiming that Qin Yi would kill her otherwise. Luo Shu was heartbroken, realizing that Qin Yi had orchestrated everything. While Captain Cai launched a manhunt for Qiao Si’er, Luo Shu decided to focus on giving Jin Miaocui a grand funeral instead of continuing the search. Chen Meiqing voiced his objections, and Han Muzhi also advised caution. Ultimately, Qi Menglin offered to host the funeral under his name.

Luo Shu stayed by Jin Miaocui’s spirit tablet, reflecting on their past together. She realized Jin Miaocui had returned to Mingke Fang to uncover the mastermind behind everything. Luo Shu organized a grand funeral for Jin Miaocui but was heartbroken by the harsh criticisms from the townsfolk, who accused both her and Jin Miaocui of wrongdoing. Overwhelmed with grief, Luo Shu collapsed, coughing up blood. Two months passed before Luo Shu’s health gradually recovered under Qi Menglin’s care.

Meanwhile, a locust plague devastated Linfen, devouring the crops. Han Muzhi resolved to lead efforts against the plague, but the locals viewed the locusts as divine locust spirits. They even dug up Jin Miaocui’s grave, believing she was to blame. Han Muzhi tried desperately to stop them and finally succeeded. Qi Menglin urged Luo Shu to return to Taiyuan, but she wanted to visit Jin Miaocui’s grave before leaving.

Han Muzhi posted notices across Linfen, explaining that locusts were not divine spirits and encouraging people to join in combating the plague. He provided practical methods to deal with the infestation. However, the locals remained skeptical and insisted on holding a ritual to appease the so-called locust spirits. Frustrated, Han Muzhi ordered Chen Meiqing to issue another notice, recruiting a specialized team to tackle the plague. Qiao Ruolan visited Luo Shu and told her about the locust plague in Linfen.

Unexpectedly, villagers stormed in and captured Luo Shu, blaming her for angering the locust spirits by organizing Jin Miaocui’s funeral. They intended to sacrifice her blood to appease the spirits. Upon learning of this, Han Muzhi rushed to the scene, rescued Luo Shu, and ordered Captain Cai to arrest the instigators. Moved by the villagers’ plight, Luo Shu was willing to try any solution. She picked up a blade, but Han Muzhi stopped her.

Qi Menglin soon arrived and persuaded the villagers to work together against the plague, offering to exchange locust corpses for grain at the military camp. The villagers hesitated but began to trust them when Han Muzhi assured them of his promise. Filled with hope, they expressed their gratitude and pledged their efforts. Liu Wan, hearing about the locust plague, sought help from her father, Liu Yiqing, asking him to support Han Muzhi.

Meanwhile, Shanxi Provincial Governor Zheng also approached Liu Yiqing. Liu Yiqing tried to reassure Liu Wan not to worry too much.
